to the Editor: This paper's endorsement of senator John McCain turns less on his stance on particular issues than on his uncommon candor and his staunch repudiation of torture. In this context, it is important that--two years after he claims to have stood down the Bush administration--there is no evidence that our government and its surrogates have stopped torturing.
